Climate Models Spell Hard Times for Tropical Farmers

When Andy Jarvis wants to explain to locals how future climate change will affect agriculture in the tropics, he uses a familiar landmark: a mountain. A 2-degree-Celsius increase in temperature — the anticipated rise from climate change in the next 40 years — is roughly equivalent to a 500-meter change in elevation, he said. Farmers growing at an elevation of 1,500 meters will need to move crops up to 2,000 meters.

Mongolia bids to keep city cool with ‘ice shield’ experiment. Geoengineering trial aims to ‘store’ winter temperatures in a giant block of ice that will cool and water Ulan Bator in summer.

The project aims to artificially create “naleds” - ultra-thick slabs of ice that occur naturally in far northern climes when rivers or springs push through cracks in the surface to seep outwards during the day and then add an extra layer of ice during the night. Unlike regular ice formation on lakes - which only gets to a metre in thickness before it insulates the water below - naleds continue expanding for as long as there is enough water pressure to penetrate the surface. Many are more than seven metres thick, which means they melt much later than regular ice.

Thermally Responsive Intervention, Doris Sung: Bloom at Materials & Applications: “The latest installation at the materials & applications courtyard, ‘Bloom’ by Los Angeles-based architect Doris Sung in collaboration with Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter and Matthew Melnyk, is a 6-meter tall intervention constructed out of a metal skin that kinetically responds to the heat of the sun. The towering shade structure carves out a tubular volume within the outdoor space and is supported by a system of self-organizing cellular panels of laser-cut sheet metal.”

NYT’s article Rescued by Design

Design shows may conjure up fizzy displays of Van Cleef & Arpels or stylish tributes to Helvetica and classic automobiles. Design implies for most people the beautiful things an affluent society makes for itself. This show is not about that kind of design. The objects here tend to look rugged and sometimes embarrassingly simple, as in “Why hadn’t anyone come up with that idea before?” Their beauty lies elsewhere: in providing economical, smart solutions to address the problems of millions of the world’s poorest people.
